In the summer of 2009, the Summer Food Service Program was scheduled to end August 15th - a full 3 weeks before the school year would begin in September. For families relying on SFSP to help feed their children through the summer, this gap could have been devastating.
Our child nutrition team worked with the office of Portland Mayor Sam Adams and local churches to coordinate an emergency campaign. Through help from Centennial and Parkrose School Districts, the Portland Water Bureau, and a dedicated group of local churches, 4,000 meals were served to children from low-income families.
